Last Modified By

Since version v0.204.0 (Jan 2024), NocoDB records the user who last modified a record. NocoDB stores this information as a system field in the database. By default, the table does not show it. To see this information in the table, create a Last Modified By field with the steps below.

Create a Last Modified By field

  1. Click the + icon to the right of the Fields header.
  2. In the dropdown modal, enter the field name (optional).
  3. In the dropdown, select the field type LastModifiedBy.
  4. Click the Save Field button.

  • On an external database connection, NocoDB does not record the user who last modifies a record automatically. Create a Last Modified By field manually with the steps above. For external database connections, this field is not a system field, and you can delete it.
  • An empty Last Modified By field means that one of these is true for the record:
    • It was created and never modified.
    • It is older than the last modified by feature (v0.204.0, Jan 2024). Before this feature release, NocoDB did not record this information.
    • It is on an external database connection: NocoDB records this information only after you create the field.
  • NocoDB does not update the Last Modified By field when you first create a record. The value starts as NULL.

Track specific fields

By default, a Last Modified By field updates when any editable field in the record changes. You can limit it to a set of fields that you select. Then edits to the other fields of the record do not change the value.

Where NocoDB supports this, the field configuration modal shows two options. To track specific fields:

  1. Select Specific fields.
  2. Click Select fields.
  3. Select the check boxes of the fields to track.
  4. Click the Save Field button.

The field then shows the user who last changed one of the selected fields. To track the whole record again, select All editable fields.

You can track all fields that users can edit, including links. You cannot track these fields:

  • Lookup, rollup, formula and other derived fields
  • Auto-generated fields, such as ID and auto number
  • System fields

Choosing which fields a Last Modified By field tracks

To track specific fields, the table needs the NocoDB row-metadata system column. NocoDB adds this column to every table that it creates on PostgreSQL. This applies in the database of the project and in an external PostgreSQL data source. Tables that already existed in a connected database do not have this column. Tables on SQLite or MySQL also do not have it. On these tables, the option does not show, and the field tracks every editable field.

Cell display

The table view shows the Last Modified By field as a read-only field. If the user who last modified the record has a display name, the cell shows the display name. If not, the cell shows the email address of the user.

Current User Filter ☁

In NocoDB, you can filter views by the user who is currently logged in. Use this to create personalized views that show the records that are relevant to that user. For more details, refer to Filtering records by current user.
