Currency

The Currency field is a numerical field that stores monetary values. It has more options to configure the currency locale and the currency symbol that it shows.

  3. Select Currency from the list of field types.
  4. Configure Currency Locale (default: en-US).
  5. Configure Currency Symbol (default: $).

  7. (Optional) Set a default value for the field.
  8. (Optional) Add a description.
  9. Click Save Field. NocoDB adds the field to your table.

Refer to the general guidelines on creating a field.

Large number abbreviation

Use the Large number abbreviation dropdown to show long amounts in a short form, such as $1.23M instead of $1,234,567.89. The default is None. With None, amounts stay full length.

OptionExample (1234567.89 in en-US, USD)
None$1,234,567.89
Auto$1.23M
Thousand$1,234.57K
Million$1.23M
Billion$0B
Trillion$0T

Auto selects the unit from the size of the amount: K for thousands, M for millions, B for billions and T for trillions. Amounts below one thousand are not abbreviated. But, like shortened amounts, they drop trailing zeros. The other options always use the unit that you select. Thus an amount much smaller than that unit rounds down to 0.

Shortened amounts keep the currency symbol and locale formatting of the field. They show a maximum of two decimal places and drop trailing zeros. The unit stays attached to the number. Thus, in a locale that puts the symbol after the amount, the value shows as 1,23M €.

Large number abbreviation options on a Currency field

Abbreviation changes only how the amount is displayed. NocoDB stores the full value, and this setting does not change it. Thus sorting, filtering and formulas do not change. To see and edit the full amount, click into a cell. When you copy a cell, you copy the full amount, not the shortened text.

A field that shows shortened amounts also accepts them when you paste. If you paste 1.2M into a cell, NocoDB stores 1200000. You cannot type a suffix into a cell. If you do, the cell goes back to its stored value.

On a PostgreSQL money column, the dropdown and the other currency options are disabled. The column type has its own currency settings.

Cell display

The Currency field shows as a numeric cell with the configured currency symbol and formatting.

Good to know

  • Currency formatting applies only to the display. The stored value stays numerical for calculations and formulas.
