Version History
Version History records a snapshot of a document each time the document is saved. Use it to see what changed between versions, and who edited what and when. You can also restore the document to any earlier version with one click.

Open Version History
- Open the document.
- Click the
⋮menu in the top-right of the page header. - Select History.

The history opens in a side-by-side modal:
- The left pane shows a preview of the selected version.
- The right pane shows a list of all recorded versions, newest first.
When the modal opens, it selects the most recent version (the current document) automatically.
How Versions Are Recorded
NocoDocs records a new version each time the document is saved. It tracks three kinds of saves:
| Source | When it's recorded | Label in the list |
|---|---|---|
| Edited | Auto-save while you type | {author} edited |
| Saved | An explicit manual save | {author} saved |
| Restored | Someone restored an earlier version. It replaced the current content. | {author} restored |
The top row always has the label Current version · <author>. This shows you which version is live.
Compare Versions
When you select an earlier version, NocoDocs highlights the changes between that version and the version immediately before it:
| Highlight | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | Text, blocks, images, attachments or embeds that were inserted at this version. |
| Red strikethrough | Content that was deleted at this version. |
| Amber | Changes to formatting only (bold, italic, highlight, link and so on). Put the pointer on an amber span to see which mark changed. |
| Title rename | If the document title changed at this version, the preview header shows the diff inline, with the same green and red highlights. |
To go through the changes one at a time, use the ↑ / ↓ arrows in the modal footer. The counter next to the arrows (for example, 2 / 5) shows your position in the change list.

When the title changes at a version, the change shows inline in the preview's H1. The old word has a red strikethrough, and the new word has a green highlight.

When you put the pointer on a formatting change (amber highlight), it shows the mark that was added or removed. Thus you can see if it is bold, italic or a link, without a search through the full diff.

Restore a Version
- In the right pane, click the version you want to restore.
- Click Restore in the modal footer.
- In the dialog that opens, confirm the action.

NocoDocs records the current document content as a new version, with source Edited. Then the content of the selected version replaces the live document. NocoDocs also records the restore as a Restored entry at the top of the list. Thus you can audit the restore, and you can also roll it back.
Who Can Restore
The roles that can edit the document can also restore a version: Editors, Creators and Owners. Viewers and Commenters can browse history and read earlier versions, but they cannot restore.
| Role | Browse history | View prior versions | Restore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Viewer | Yes | Yes | No |
| Commenter | Yes | Yes | No |
| Editor | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Creator | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Owner | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Locked Versions
Some versions are outside the retention window of your plan. When you select one, the preview pane shows an upgrade panel, not the document content. The panel:
- Names the lowest plan with a retention window that includes the selected version.
- Shows the retention window for each plan, and highlights the matching plan.
- Shows an Upgrade now button (Cloud) or an Enter license key button (self-hosted).

You can upgrade, or apply a license that covers the age of the version. Then open the history panel again. You can now browse and restore the version that was locked.
Availability
- Version History is available on Cloud and on self-hosted deployments. Your plan sets how far back the history goes. Refer to pricing for details.
